Old, hunched, and gentle, Silas works with the coroner’s office, and he is the one who called Abigail to tell her that her mother had died. In Sylvia’s church, he is her quiet right hand.

He knew Abigail’s mother longer than almost anyone did, and he carries something about her that he cannot bring himself to say out loud. In a town that punishes anyone who speaks against it, Silas has spent a very long time saying nothing at all.
